Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between, Granite, Marble, Quartz, and Quartzite? +

Granite is an igneous rock that is one of the hardest on the planet. Quartzite is quite a bit different and is a metamorphic rock that is made almost entirely from the world’s hardest rock—quartz. Quartzite has the slightest edge on Granite in retaining that position.

Marble, like quartzite, is a metamorphic rock. This means it will not change when exposed to heat or pressure. Marble is also a mineral and it originates from limestone or dolomite. When compared to quartzite, marble is also much softer, and it can be damaged from chemical spills or acidic liquids like lemon juice.

Quartz is a natural material, while quartzite is a man-made stone. Quartzite starts as sandstone and is fused with crystals under heat and pressure for a unique finish. Quartz can be created to look like other stones and can match your color preferences, while quartzite is more limited in scope for patterns and colors.

How do I measure my countertop square footage? +

To measure your kitchen countertop for a new countertop from Skyline Countertops, follow these steps:

  1. Determine the length and width of your countertop: Use a tape measure or a laser measure to measure the length and width of your countertop. Write down these measurements.

  2. Measure the depth of your countertop: Measure the distance from the front of your countertop to the wall behind it. This will give you the depth of your countertop. Write down this measurement as well.

  3. Measure any cutouts or irregularities: If your countertop has any cutouts (such as for a sink or cooktop), measure the length and width of these cutouts as well. You may also want to measure any other irregularities in your countertop, such as corners or angles.

  4. Draw a diagram: Using a piece of paper and a pencil, draw a rough diagram of your countertop. Be sure to mark the measurements you took and any cutouts or irregularities.

  5. Take your measurements and diagram to Skyline Countertops: Bring your measurements and diagram to Skyline Countertops. We will use this information to create a custom countertop that fits your space perfectly.
